TMJ Pain Treatment
TMJ, or Temporo-Mandibular Joint, refers to the place where your lower jaw attaches to your skull, directly in front of the ear on each side of your head. You exercise or work your TMJ every time you talk, eat, or swallow.
As part of a Parkview Dental comprehensive examination, we check the TMJ to ensure the joint’s proper function.
It’s not unusual to have problems with the TMJ – it’s rather common. In fact, approximately 20% of adults experience some sort of Temporo-Mandibular joint dysfunction. TMJ issues can produce the following symptoms:
A clicking jaw when you open your mouth
A grating sound when you chew
Difficulty opening or closing your mouth
Tender or aching jaws
Clenching your jaws or grinding your teeth when you’re sleeping
How do TMJ disorders arise? They can be caused by arthritis, jaw trauma ( a blow to the jaw, for example) or degeneration of the joint. If you are having pain or difficulty with the TMJ, please let us know before or during your visit. Your dentist can discuss the options available for TMJ pain relief.
If your dentist recommends you see a specialist, they will set up a referral for you.
